Google Nexus One Review

There aren’t too many details about this at the moment, but it looks like Google’s second Nexus Android phone (perhaps named Nexus Two?) “will be for enterprise users.”

According to Reuters, Andy Rubin himself said so, in an interview with Walt Mossberg – apparently, this is the interview, but it looks like there’s nothing about the “next Nexus” in it.

Anyway, the Android mastermind has reportedly also declared that the new Nexus phone may come with a physical keyboard – which most probably means a sliding QWERTY one.

It’s not clear yet if the second Google Nexus handset will be manufactured by HTC (like the Nexus One), or by another company. Motorola, Samsung maybe?

While the Nexus One competes with the likes of iPhone and other stylish handsets, an enterprise-targeted Nexus phone will likely compete with RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones, as well as with Windows Mobile devices.

Now the question is: will Google really make an enterprise phone?

Motorola Milestone Review

The first phone to run Android 2.0, the Motorola Milestone feels like an evolution of the T-Mobile G1. It's got a funny chin and handy slide-out Qwerty keyboard, but, with built-in Microsoft Exchange support, a stunning capacitive touchscreen and a smorgasbord of smart-phone features, the geeky gadget feels much more polished.

The Milestone is available from eXpansys for £450 SIM-free, or for £50 on a £35-per-month, 18-month contract.

Enter the Android
The Milestone is the first phone to run version 2.0 of Google's Android operating system, and there are a couple of big improvements. The phone supports Exchange email without a separate application, and it does it very well -- we had no trouble setting up our Outlook email.

Exchange email is still handled separately to Gmail, in a different application, as on previous Android phones. Unlike on older phones, however, you can add more than one Gmail account, and they're all shown in the same, combined inbox. We'd rather have Outlook and Gmail work from the same email app, but we can survive without it.

Motorola told us that the official Facebook app for Android should work with Android 2.0 to merge your friends into your phone's address book, but we had no luck getting this specific feature working on our test phone, although the app worked fine otherwise.

This popular feature is available on HTC's Android phones and via the Motoblur feature of the Motorola Dext. There's no Motoblur on the Milestone, so its social-networking features are much more limited than the Dext's, but it's worth the swap to get the latest features of Android 2.0.

Of course, you still get all of the usual Android advantages, like a choice of thousands of apps from the Android Market. Apps are easy to find and install, and still mostly free, so you can add every feature and game you can imagine to the Milestone.

Worldwide wonderful
The Web browser has also been improved in the new version of Android, and it does a fantastic job of rendering complex Web sites accurately and clearly. It doesn't support Flash, so you'll miss out on some elements, but this is still one of the best Web-surfing phones out there, thanks to its speed and simple user interface.

The Web browser also shows off the biggest bragging right that we have over the hugely popular US version of this phone, the Droid. Our Web browser has multi-touch zoom capability, so you can zoom in and out on those fiddly little links with a pinch of your fingers. It's a fast, intuitive way to interact with the Web, and we love it. We just wish it were everywhere -- there's no multi-touch functionality in Google Maps, for example.

MotoNav to nowhere
But the Yankees have their revenge -- the most exciting feature on the Droid is nowhere to be found on the Milestone. Google Maps Navigation is a free sat-nav feature for Google Maps that looks simply awesome, and the Milestone doesn't have it. It doesn't have the in-car user-interface option either, which shows simple, big icons in landscape mode for easy tapping when you're on the road.

Acer Liquid Review

acer liquid

The Acer Liquid isn't the fire-breathing Snapdragon beast we've been waiting for, but it's still got the bite of a good Android-powered smart phone. Sporting a big capacitive touchscreen and flat buttons, its sleek design is a huge improvement on Acer's previous mobile efforts, although it feels plasticky in places. Acer's additions to the standard Android operating system are nothing to write home about, but we're not complaining either, since the Liquid should be more than capable of slaking your smart-phone thirst.

The Liquid is available SIM-free for around £330.

Snapdragon slayer
The Liquid doesn't quite live up to its Snapdragon hype, because its processor doesn't hit the fiery 1GHz speeds we were promised, running at 768MHz instead. That's still nothing to sniff at, though, and, just as more megapixels don't necessarily make for a better camera, more megahertz don't always translate into a faster phone. Nevertheless, we can't help but feel slightly disappointed.

n our tests, multiple applications ran happily in the background as we surfed the Web, browsed photos and listened to music. Web pages loaded quickly too. We found there was occasionally a tiny lag when typing with the on-screen keyboard, but it wasn't enough to be annoying, and the Liquid is better in this respect than the majority of touchscreen phones we've tested.

The keyboard itself doesn't rank among our favourites, but it's not on our most-hated list either. It's somewhere between that of our beloved HTC Hero and the less-popular effort on the Samsung Galaxy i7500. We found it took some time to get used to hitting the keys accurately, and the spelling correction isn't as good as on the iPhone. We also had trouble when typing at top speed. Unless we proceeded slowly and steadily, we found the Liquid didn't register every key we tapped.

Android alone
Acer hasn't done much messing around with the little green robot, and the Android user interface is almost untouched. There are a handful of custom widgets, like a scrolling list of thumbnails that shows your Web bookmarks, and there are only three home screens, rather than the usual five. This could be a problem if you like loading up multiple home screens with widgets and shortcuts, but, unless you're used to having more, we don't think it'll be a problem.

All Android's usual fantastic features are present and correct, including great Gmail support, the handy Google Maps and access to the Android Market, which is stuffed full of mostly free apps that give the Liquid even more powers.

Acer's subtle additions to Android include the ability to merge your Facebook contacts with your address book. This doesn't work as smoothly as the similar feature on the HTC Hero -- you have to log in on a Web page, for example, rather than a form optimised for the phone's screen. It also doesn't make it easy to merge contacts if you end up with a few duplicates.

The Facebook integration is a good example of the Liquid as a whole -- it does what it needs to, doesn't make a fuss, and doesn't have too many bells and whistles. The Liquid doesn't reach the heights of usability and innovation reached by the Hero, but Android is already excellent, so you won't miss any smart-phone goodness.

Screening your calls
The Liquid's screen also belongs in the middle of the pack. At 89mm (3.5 inches), we like that it's bigger than the Hero's display, and it sits flush with the bezel around it, which looks great. But, despite its WVGA resolution, it doesn't look as sharp as the Hero's screen, and neither compare to the stunning AMOLED display on the Galaxy.

We also found we had to turn the brightness up to get the most out of the screen. Once done, videos looked great. With its speedy Web-browsing capability and excellent YouTube app, we think this phone is ideal for YouTube addicts.

Button be gone
The Liquid isn't the sexiest phone around, and its shiny plastic case makes it feel rather cheesy. But we love the fact that Acer has stripped down the buttons and trackballs usually found on Android phones in favour of four sleek, touch-sensitive controls.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness Review

The Sony Ericsson has trimmed the fat with its Xperia Pureness and made a phone that doesn't have room for any extras, just a sleek-looking, simple handset that’s great for a night out. You could get a lot more phone for the money, but if you want something that stands out it's a uniquely stylish option.

The Pureness is only available SIM-free at Selfridges in Manchester, Birmingham and London for £650.

The naked phone
The Pureness's designers claim that they started from scratch for this phone, and you may think that they forgot something -- there's no back to the screen, and no colour either. Instead, the screen is a 43mm (1.8-inch) see-through glass panel where the user interface appears in frosted white like steam on a bathroom mirror. You can't type anything too controversial because, thanks to the transparent screen, anyone looking at the phone from the back will be able to read your texts and the numbers you dial.

The translucent screen is an interesting novelty, but we found that it wasn't that easy to read in nright light. It is illuminated with LEDs around the edges, so it gets clearer as the room gets darker, making it an option for an evening out.

The keyboard is equally obscure, showing as a blank, black surface until the back-lit LED numbers appear when you press a key. Overall, the stealthy keyboard and see-through screen make the Pureness look elegant, and you may get some oohs and aahs when you whip it out over champagne cocktails. But the few advanced features, like Web browsing, are almost useless because of the lack of a sharp, colour display. There's no camera either.

Basics on board
If you don't care much about anything except making and receiving calls, you’re in luck. Despite its low profile, the Pureness's keypad is easy to press and calls came through loud and clear in our tests.

The rest of the basics are all in place, if you can see them -- text messages are simple to type and send with a familiar T9 predictive text dictionary, for example. There's even a music player so that you can catch a few tunes on your night out, and there's a microSD card slot to add more memory. The music player can show your songs' cover art, but like the Web browser, it doesn't look like much on the monochromatic screen.

Call for help
The Pureness hopes to tempt the fashionistas by including a year's subscription to the Quintessentially concierge service -- also a feature on the even pricier Nokia Vertu -- which will book your theatre tickets and call you a cab, among other rich-person perks. The service is free for the first year, after which an annual £750 fee kicks in. If you want the Quintessentially service, then buying the Pureness is a cheaper way of getting it, as the price of the phone is £100 cheaper than a year's subscription. Plus, you'll nab a funky, compact phone to pop in your pocket when you don’t want to drag around your giant smart phone. The Pureness has an easy-access SIM card slot so switching is lightening fast.

With no colour screen and no advanced features, it’s no surprise that the Pureness’s battery goes all night and then makes you breakfast. We had no trouble getting multiple days out of the Pureness under normal use.
